38391575 10100176878981550 6238207124313210880 oThe Knox County Landmarks Foundation Mural Committee invites the public to the dedication of the Mount Vernon Industry Mural on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m. The dedication will be held in the parking lot of Mount Vernon Dental, 309 S. Mulberry St.

The Mount Vernon Industry Mural, located on the West Mulberry Street wall of McDaniel CPA, is a dynamic montage of selected Mount Vernon industries from the past, including the beginnings of gas and oil drilling, as well as the railroad industry, which played an important role in manufacturing. The mural depicts the contributions by the city of Mount Vernon to industrial ventures over many years, and its colorful artistic composition and scale reflect the vibrant life of Mount Vernon.

The mural was created by John J. Donnelly, a native of Philadelphia, PA, and longtime Mount Vernon resident. Donnelly is a professor of art at Mount Vernon Nazarene University and has painted several residential and commercial murals in Mount Vernon. Donnelly will be on hand at the dedication to answer questions about his work.

Donnelly received an MFA from Indiana University and a BFA from Tyler School of Art in painting and drawing. He has received residency fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont; the Clipperton Project Residency in the Faroe Islands; and to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine. Donnelly is a two-time participant in ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and is a recipient of the Ohio Arts Council Individual Artists Fellowship, among other honors.

Donnelly was the artist on two other local murals, MTVarts’ Theatre Mural (14 E. Ohio Ave) and the Masonic Mural (2 Public Square). The Theatre Mural depicts its namesake through the ages; and the Masonic Mural is a look into the historic building which shows scenes that may have occurred in the past.  The Masonic Mural also has “easter eggs” such as the previous head of the mural committee, actors and actresses from previous eras, Johnny Appleseed and much more.

The Mount Vernon Industry Mural is made possible through a grant provided by The Ariel Foundation. Carrie Hyman, the executive director of Main Street Mount Vernon, chairs the mural committee, which is currently composed of 14 community members. New members are welcome by contact through www.knoxlandmarks.org.

Refreshments will be provided at the dedication. In the event of inclement weather, the dedication will be held in the office of McDaniel CPA, 20 W. Ohio Ave.
