2019 First Friday Season
Great food, music and family fun for all at the 2019 downtown First Friday season. Main Street Mount Vernon is thrilled to bring fun, free, family entertainment for the residents of Mount Vernon and beyond.
“It’s been great to bring the family to First Fridays,” says Nick Burson, board member and local business owner. “There’s always something for the kids. We always run into other friends and family and have a great time. It’s great to be able to do so downtown.”
The season kicks off with a Summer Celebration at the June 7th First Friday sponsored by Edward Jones, Sara Mankins. Main Stage entertainment will be the Kokosing River Surf Club, complemented on the South Stage (E. Gambier Street) by Yvonne Sanson students, sponsored by Herald’s Appliances & Electronics. Start your summer off right at the beach ball bonanza with sand, sun, and fun at Central Ohio Technical College (COTC); enjoy sand art, hoola-hoops and beach ball fun! Partnering with the Knox County Landmarks Foundation (KCLF), MSMV is bringing a behind-the-scenes look at the downtown Mural Projects. Grab a ride on the tractor and hear John Donnelly, the artist, tell about inspiration, working with the community, and hidden Easter eggs.
On July 5, Shops & Stars & Stripes will celebrate our country and our shops as we host a patriotic themed First Friday event, sponsored by Griffin Insurance. On the Main Stage, February Star will be rocking, and the South Stage entertainment is still to be determined, sponsored by Herald’s Appliances & Electronics. As we celebrate our own patriots and the ‘superheroes’ that defend our great nation, the COTC Superheroes will return to ‘marvel’ downtown Mount Vernon. Picture yourself at COTC and celebrate your inner superhero while you strike a pose with your favorite Action Hero. Children can enjoy artful mayhem, power-up games, flying giveaways and much more! In July, KCLF is premiering its new self-guided walking tour. Stop by their booth to get a free guide!
Your furry family is welcomed at the August 2nd Dog Days of Summer themed event. The Main Stage will host Harmless Habit, sponsored by Mid-Ohio Power Sports, and the South Stage Entertainment is Soul Legacy, sponsored by Herald’s Appliances & Electronics. Dunk those Dog Day Blues with COTC. Meet Jungle Joe and his Crickey Croc friends. Bring your puppy pals for dog treats and giveaways. Don’t miss this PAWsome Event! Ever wonder what upstairs looks like downtown? Get a sneak peek into “Hidden Spaces” with KCLF in August’s look at historic downtown buildings.
September 6th is a special First Friday celebrating our local first responders. We in downtown Mount Vernon are thankful for all they do for our community. Main Stage entertainment, sponsored by Central Ohio Technical College, Kenyon College, and Mount Vernon Nazarene University, is local group The Slang. Representing the South Stage is the Mount Vernon Community Band, sponsored by Herald’s Appliances & Electronics. Celebrate our first-responders with COTC, and experience hands-on what it takes to save lives. Meet first responders, and enjoy a variety of demonstrations, safety information, and a special visit and photo with our SURPRISE special guest! Kids and historic buildings lead to a fun educational experience; join KCLF as they share the history of downtown buildings in a fun way!
“The Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau is excited to work with the Mount Vernon Main Street program,” said Justin Bauer, Marketing Director at Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Main Street Mount Vernon board member. “We feel that while First Friday’s serve our community they also offer outside guests another reason to visit Knox County. The support that the Main Street program offers to downtown businesses is another reason we continue to see tourism growth in our downtown area in the way of restaurants, shops, and other businesses.”
The First Friday Cruise-In is returning to the outer area of the square for the 2019 season. Sponsored by Storyside Church, this feature, in partnership with Knox Cars and Coffee, brings out the car enthusiast in all of us. Head uptown to try your hand at some fun yard games; winners get gift cards! Yard games are coordinated by the Knox County Board of Realtors.
Balloon animals, face painting, and magic tricks, oh my! Rex Naylor, balloon animal artist, and Jimmy Bercham, magician, will be in front of Paragraphs Bookstore on S. Main Street. Face painting by First Church of the Nazarene will be located on the square along with the YMCA, Knox County Knockout and other rotating kids’ activities. Kids’ entertainment is sponsored by Half-Baked Cafe, Knox Community Hospital, and Paragraphs Bookstore.
Farm Friday is designed to showcase our local agriculture and the people who bring it to life. Located on E. Vine Street and the First-Knox National Bank parking lot, each month will showcase at least one animal group. June will include all things ag, July will have draft horses and how they built America, August is all about the dogs, and September will honor first responders and feature local food.
